Currently, on the market, there are many hearing aids with different capabilities, shapes, and sizes. BTE hearing aids are still the most popular, however, because of its size are visible behind the ear, especially in patients with short hair or small earlobes.
Producers of hearing aids reach out to the people for whom the appearance and aesthetics are important factors while wearing hearing aids. Those are ITC and CIC hearing aids, which are discretely placed in the ear canal and does not cause discomfort while wearing and are virtually invisible in the ear.
What are styles of discrete hearing aids?
– ITC (In The Canal) — for mild to moderately severe hearing loss. This model is placed entirely in the ear canal and is powered by the 312 battery. It may be visible, especially from the side. It is usually equipped with 1 or 2 microphones, potentiometer or program switch, sometimes even all these elements, as they have a direct impact on the size of the case
– MC (Mini Canal) — some producers make a smaller version of the ITC aid, however, bigger than the CIC. It is powered by the type 10 battery. Mainly used when ITC parameters are required and the user seeks discretion. Mini Canal aid is equipped with one microphone, usually without additional controls, or at most a program switch.
– CIC (Complete In Canal) — hearing aid placed completely in the ear canal, usually almost invisible from the outside, even for a person looking from the side. CIC aid has one microphone installed, also some models have a program switch.
– IIC (Invisible In Canal) — the smallest hearing aid, placed deep in the ear canal, just before the eardrum. It is completely invisible, it has a microphone and is not equipped with any switches.
How is the discrete hearing aid made? Discrete and invisible hearing aids are made of ear mold of the particular patient. Audiologist or a hearing aid professional gets an ear mold using a special impression material so the aid’s case perfectly adapts to the ear canal without any pressure, moving or pain. Time needed to make a custom case is approx. one week since the ear impression were made.
Who are the invisible and discrete hearing aids made for? CIC and IIC aids are intended for all patients who appreciate discretion and wearing comfort. The size of aesthetic aids allows the deep placement in the ear canal, sometimes right under the eardrum. As a result, hearing aids placed in the ear significantly improve hearing and speech understanding without revealing their presence in the ear. These hearing aids are destined for active professionals, doctors, lawyers, civil service employees, young people from 16 years of age , as well as for all the other patients who do not want to flaunt the fact of wearing hearing aids.
CIC and CIC aids should not be used in children and adolescents under 16 years of age due to the narrow auditory canals and the need for frequent case replacement and with regard to the growth and expansion of the ear canal with age.
Aesthetic and invisible hearing aids are very simple in use and does not require any self-regulation. These hearing aids are fully automatic, depending on the acoustic environment in which the patient resides, auto adjusts the speech volume level or reduce the level of ambient noises. Just like in other models, the patient needs to take them off while sleeping or swimming.
